Breeding Leopard Geckos – A How to Guide

Among all types of lizards, leopard geckos are one of the simplest to breed yourself. Many people admire their lovely and interesting patterns, and it is fun to know that they can be bred to achieve even more interesting patterns and appearance in the offspring – providing the opportunity to create some really stunning specimens.

The first step in breeding leopard geckos is acquiring a sexually mature male and a female companion. How do you determine the sex of your gecko? Determining the sex of leopard geckos requires a simple task. You should check the under side of the gecko. To identify a male gecko, look at the underside of the tail where you will find 2 large hemipenal bulges anterior to the vent. Pre-anal pores in the shape of the letter V will be located behind the hind legs of male geckos. Pre-anal pits, rather than the sizable pores, may be seen in female leopard geckos, but they will lack the hemipenal bulges located behind the vent. Take care when determining sex for a fat female since those bulges could be fatty tissue instead.

Maturation and age are required, as well as good health, if you intend to breed with your leopard geckos. The males must be at least 8 months old and require a minimum weight of 45g. In contrast, the females should be at least a year old and a minimum of 50 grams in weight. Breeding is simply a matter of putting an adult pair in the same enclosure. Mating may be immediate, or may require a bit of time. Leaving them together for a few days is a good idea. After they begin to play, the male’s behavior towards the female will become more aggressive. The male will bite the female, but if she is not interested in the mating process, she will bite back. Leopard geckos can appear to be fighting when they are behaving normally. Another behavior of the male is the rapid fluttering of his tail resulting now and again in a strikingly loud noise. If after a few days together, mating is yet to occur, separate the two and then try again after several days have passed.

If you’re breeding these creatures, the female needs to be provided with a proper place to deposit her eggs. This can be made from a damp hide stuffed with moistened, not wringing wet, bed-a-beast. Females will deposit their initial batch of eggs within a month of breeding successfully. One clutch typically has one to two white oval eggs in it. Yearly, leopard geckos lay about eight clutches, at a rate of once or twice a month. Once the laying of eggs is complete , eggs should be shifted to incubator. Astonishingly whether gecko baby will be male or female is determined by the egg incubation temprature . If the the incubator’s temperature is decreasd to approximately 80 degrees, the clutch develops into females. When you keep the incubator warmer, at about 90 degrees, the brood is likely to be male. To get a clutch with a mix of both sexes, you should incubate the eggs at approximately 85 degrees.

Leopard Gecko Information – What An Owner Needs to Know

Attractive to lizard lovers for their ease in care, leopard geckos have become one of the most popular geckos in the world. Whether you’re new to geckos, or an experienced handler, you will find much joy in these incredible creatures.

One thing that makes the leopard gecko so popular with those interested in the world of lizards is the vast amount of unique and vibrant colors available to the buyer. Generations of breeding have provided a wide array of beautiful patterns of leopard geckos. Several of the leopard gecko variations are tangerine, carrot-tail, tremper albino, bell albino and las vegas. (rainwater) albino, stripe, reverse stripe, red stripe, jungle, giant, APTOR, RAPTOR, mack snow, line bred snow, patternless, enigma, eclipse, and blizzards just to name a few.

Many gecko hybrids have been successfully created, thus the wide variety of available geckos. Because leopard geckos have unique looks it’s easy to understand why their one of the most remarkable captive species.

Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan (all middle eastern countries) are home to the Leopard Gecko. Adult leopard geckos can grow to be lengths of 8 to 12 inches long and weigh 60 to over 100 grams in captivity.

Baby leopard geckos are approximately 3 inches long and weigh 3 grams on the average. These lizards are a terrestrial animal which means they prefer to live in the ground. Their nocturnal nature means that most of their activity occurs in the evening.

When properly cared for, leopard geckos may have a life span of two decades. But in order to keep them happy and healthy, leopard gecko’s owners must provide their lizards with a few essential things.

Leopard geckos shed their skin regularly. For this they require humid surroundings which helps them with proper skin shedding. Owners can provide their lizards with a shed box. What is referred to as a shed box is simply a place for the lizards to hide and contains a dampened moss inside.

This helps the geckos when they need to shed their skin. It’s also important that leopard geckos are fed healthily. Their fat stores are kept inside their tails. This keeps them supplied when things are scarce. If your leopard gecko’s tail is full and fat-filled, that is a sign of health. You need to provide your leopard gecko with lighting as well as a heat supply.

A temperature gradient is essential for maintaining the gecko’s health. Provide your gecko with a temperature gradient that will allow it to warm up or cool down as needed: Keep one end of the habitat warm and the other end cool.

Similar to lot of reptiles leopard geckos are likely to carry infection causing germs and salmonella Always be sure to thoroughly wash your hands after handling your gecko or the content of its habitat.

As time goes on leopard geckos are gaining in popularity and will continue to be one of the most kept reptiles in captivity. Breeders will produce increasingly unique variations as the popularity of the breed grows.

Leopard Gecko Feed

A big part of nurturing a leopard gecko is ensuring it is on a proper diet. Young infant geckos require daily feeding while people with reached maturity are fine with a day in between meals. Leopard Geckos sustain themselves almost entirely on insects. When kept in captivity, leopard geckos will eat crickets, mealworms, superworms, silkworms, and small cockroaches to survive. You may want to offer your leopard gecko a pinkie mouse as a rare treat, ever so often. A baby leopard gecko should only be handled by adults when it’s a few days old. females who have reached sexual maturity will find pinkie mice a fantastic choice of diet. An unusual and special treat is a waxworm. Leopard geckos may become dependent on waxworms, so you should only offer them occasionally. These have the same adverse effects on a leopard gecko’s diet as cholocolate has on ours. To avoid choking the gecko, ensure that its food is no bigger than half the capacity of the gecko’s head.

Caring for leopard geckos amounts to being aware of their nutritional needs. Be guided by your gecko, only give as much food as he needs in those days. This varies with respect to the leopard gecko’s size. Your leopard gecko may eat anywhere between four and eight crickets at once. You ought not let crickets run loose in your leopard gecko’s cage for an extended time period. You’ll end up with a stressed gecko who may be chewed by starving crickets. Mealworms, superworms, are among the food which may be left in a dish in the leopard gecko’s cage without causing it any danger.

Gut loading foods for a whole day is an important part of providing suitable and helath giving nutrition to your leopard gecko. You might like to healthily feed your gecko’s food, before they are ultimately eaten themselves. This process is referred to as gutloading. The healthier the prey you feed your lizard, the healthier the gecko will become. You may want to provide the insects some things such as fruits, veggies and various types of grains. Prey need food too, these come pre dried and ready for consumption. Supplemental nutritional supplements can be contributed to the diet of your gecko by dusting commercially available supplements over their crickets and other foodstuffs or by feeding them to the foodstuffs before offering them to the gecko. Once you have dusted the crickets, immediately place them in with your gecko. Geckos need the calcium and vitamins and you should get the crickets to them before the crickets have a chance to remove the dust. Dusting may help to enrich the young leopard geckos along with fertile females.

A leopard gecko must have fresh water available always. You should regularly change the leopard gecko’s water dish to be able to avoid the risk of festering bacteria.

Summary of the Leopard Gecko In the Albino Form

In 1991 when the first designer leopard geckos hatched, many people were excited and fascinated by this new patterns of mutation which were causing unique colors. Among the different varieties of leopard gecko specimens are leucistic, high yellow, and albino types.

There are three unique types of albino leopard geckos. Two are Tremper and Rainwater. Las Vegas, Nevada& Bell. The entire three species of albinos are not known to possess dominant characteristics. A tremper albino with a rainwater or bell albino breeds normal, if not albino Recessive traits happened because certain genes that control specific aspects of an animal mutate for some reason. There are no actions that can be implemented to increase the odds of identifying a new recessive trait, as they are discovered accidentally. One has to rely greatly on luck while this particular specie is bred.

Normally, it is very difficult to tell the differences between the three strains of albino leopard geckos. Normally, it is an educated guess as to which strain an adult albino leopard gecko is. There are three albino stains in leopard geckos . The most common of the three is, tremper stain. The earliest among albino species which were noticed, were these. Often, albino geckos are sold as “mocha Strain”, as they have a brown color. In addition, they could exhibit a vivid white or pink hue. The color of an albino leopard gecko ranges from slightly lighter than the normal color of non-albino leopard geckos, to bright red. Depending on the temperature during incubation, geckos may vary in hue on their skin along with their eye color. When the incubation temperature is maintained higher, the chances of breeding a leopard gecko that is darker in color is greater.

Rainwater albinos are the second most common of the three different types of albinos. While they are believed to be more pink in color compared to the different varieties, this isn’t necessarily the case. The Bell specie of albino leopard geckos happens to be very uncommon when compared with the rest even to this date. Unlike other albino strains, they have much darker, high-contrast pink areas. The Bell variety of albino leopard gecko possesses the most vivid red eyes of any of the 3 types. In the albino strains, the young animals with red eye color often changes with age to a normal beige color, while the bell albino eye color often stays the same, or at most turns a pinkish color, through adulthood. Within the three strains of albinos; all show a sensitivity to bright light. Albinos generally do not eat during the day due to their extreme sensitivity to light.

The more popular, easy care leopard geckos are bred, the greater their color variations. The number of known dominant recessive traits could increase in the period ahead. These unusual animals become all the more unique more quickly through breeding among mutations.
